Our students represented Leeds City College with distinction over the past few months whilst competing in the FA People’s Cup an inclusive nation-wide five-aside competition, giving the ‘everyday person’ the opportunity to start their own journey to Wembley.

The first round of the FA Peoples Cup involved an intra college competition held at The Ramgarhia Sikh Centre with teams playing for the right to represent the college in the Semi Finals. Both mens and womens competitions were held. Students enjoyed the experience and the winning team’s progressed to represent the college at University of Huddersfield.

The two teams then competed against other colleges in the semi finals. The FA in partnership with the BBC interviewed and filmed our student’s journey which saw our men’s team losing in the final and our women’s team winning their event and going to the final event at St George’s Park (The National Centre for English Football). The competition hosted students from various colleges with our teams made up from Enfield ,University Centre and Park Lane students.

So onto the National Finals went the female team who were joined by the mens team who were invited on the back of their performances in the regional competition.

The men’s team made it all the way to the final losing in a close fought match with Stoke College and just missing out on a trip to Wembley where they would have collected the trophy during the FA Cup final.

Up next were the women’s team who battled their way to the semi finals losing on penalties to the eventual winners.

Both teams were a huge credit to the college throughout the competition and were fantastically supported by Kasam Hussain and Karim Ibrahim who supported the teams all the way. Both teams were interviewed and filmed by the BBC at the national finals and were impressed with the diversity of our teams and their commitment.

The college will be back in the FA Peoples Cup next year to claim the title and provide students with amazing opportunities. If you want to get your students involved please contact Karim or Kasam.
